nor'easter causes power cuts, flight cancellations in northeast US
A powerful nor'easter has caused widespread power cuts and flight cancellations in the northeast US, with officials urging caution. Some 95,000 people faced outages, and over 400 flights were canceled.

A powerful nor'easter has battered the northeastern United States, causing widespread power cuts, flight cancellations, and coastal flooding. The storm, which brought heavy rain and strong winds, has forced authorities to issue warnings and cancel events, with some 95,000 people in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania facing power outages as of Saturday afternoon.
The National Weather Service warned of 'major coastal flooding' and 'significant inundation in low-lying areas near the shore,' urging residents to prepare for potential road closures and impacts to homes and businesses. New York Governor Kathy Kochul and Mayor Zohran Mamdani both emphasized the dangers of the storm, with the mayor advising residents not to travel unless necessary. 'Conditions are extremely dangerous. Anyone who goes in or near the water this weekend is literally gambling with their life,' Kochul said in a press briefing.
The storm has disrupted air travel, with hundreds of flights canceled and thousands delayed. FlightAware reported 439 flights canceled and 2,459 delayed as of Saturday evening. Airlines including JetBlue, United, and American issued travel alerts, allowing passengers to change flights without a fee. Major cultural events, including the Global Citizen Festival in New York and the Oceans Calling Festival in Maryland, were also canceled. Organizers of the Global Citizen event said it was the first time in 14 years they had to cancel an event due to weather.
In New Jersey, the storm caused at least one fatality, with a man killed by a falling tree in Brooklyn, according to CBS News. The full moon on Saturday is projected to worsen coastal flooding, with streets and homes in Surf City and Manasquan inundated. Governor Mikie Sherrill urged residents to take the storm seriously and follow local guidance. The Red Sox also moved their final game of a series against the Chicago Cubs to Sunday afternoon in Florida, while a professional football match between Red Bull New York and St Louis City SC was canceled.
The storm has also affected the Boston area, with the Red Sox moving their game and Ed Sheeran's concert at Gillette Stadium canceled for safety reasons. The Federal Aviation Administration recommended passengers check with airlines for flight status, with over 2,400 flights delayed and 1,199 grounded. The National Weather Service has issued alerts for wind gusts up to 55mph (86km/h) in New York, leading to downed trees and power lines.
The exact number of power outages and the full impact of the storm on infrastructure and daily life remain unclear. Further updates are expected as the storm continues to affect the region.
