Raipur. The Central Government is implementing the National Livestock Mission (NLM) to transform livestock rearing into a profitable business and create employment opportunities for youth and women. Under the mission, financial and technical support is provided to livestock rearers, farmers, self-help groups, FPOs, and entrepreneurs to develop livestock-based enterprises. Under the National Livestock Mission, activities related to goat, sheep, buffalo, and poultry rearing, as well as fodder production, breed improvement, and breeding management, are being encouraged. The mission focuses not only on increasing livestock numbers but also on better breeds, scientific feeding, health management, and productivity.
Scientific Approach to Livestock Rearing
Livestock rearing plays a significant role in rural economies. Therefore, efforts are being made to integrate modern technology and organized management to develop new opportunities for income and employment. For example, if a rural youth adopts goat rearing as a business, modern livestock rearing models emphasize the selection of good breeds, scientific sheds, balanced feeding, timely vaccination, and regular health management. Keeping records of livestock growth and reproduction, and planning sales according to market demand can help make the business more organized.
Fodder Production and Better Nutrition Are Also Important
Availability and cost of fodder are important factors in livestock business. Under the National Livestock Mission, encouragement is also being given to fodder and feed production. Adopting self-fodder production, scientific feeding, and better health management can help livestock rearers control production costs and increase productivity. Similarly, emphasis is being placed on producing quality livestock through breed improvement and better breeding management. This can help develop livestock rearing as a more productive and organized business.
Opportunities for Youth and Women Groups
Through the National Livestock Mission, rural youth, women groups, self-help groups, FPOs, and other eligible institutions can develop livestock-based enterprises. Opportunities are available to advance activities such as collective fodder production, goat and sheep rearing, poultry, and other related activities as businesses. The scheme provides financial assistance or subsidies for eligible projects as per the provisions. However, the amount of assistance, eligibility, and project-related conditions may vary depending on the activity and applicable guidelines. Therefore, it is necessary to obtain information about current rules and eligibility from the relevant livestock department or state implementation agency before applying.
