Macklemore Dropped From Ed Sheeran Tour After Palestine Advocacy
Rapper Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour after pro-Palestinian comments. Jewish groups and venues objected. No official response from Sheeran. Replacement not confirmed. Conflict over free speech and political expression.

Rapper Macklemore has been removed from Ed Sheeran's US tour following pro-Palestinian comments made during two concerts in early September. The decision came after venues, including Gillette Stadium, barred the rapper from performing, citing concerns over his advocacy and alleged antisemitic rhetoric.
Macklemore, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, performed at Ed Sheeran's Loop tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on 4 and 5 September. During the shows, he repeatedly called for 'Free Palestine' and performed his song 'Hind's Hall,' which criticizes Israel's military actions in Gaza. Video footage of the conflict was shown on the big screen during the performance. The rapper later addressed the audience, directly speaking to 'Jewish brothers and sisters' and stating that criticism of Israel was not a criticism of Jewish people.
The controversy intensified after Jewish groups, including the Israeli-American Council, criticized Macklemore's actions. The council argued that the performance was not a political rally but a concert, and that the rapper used 'biased messaging and disputed claims.' Venues reportedly refused to host Macklemore's remaining tour dates, citing concerns over 'hate speech.' American businessman Robert Kraft, who owns Gillette Stadium, confirmed that Macklemore was barred from performing there, stating that his 'broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery' led to the decision.
Macklemore responded in a lengthy Instagram statement, asserting that he had been dropped from the tour due to a 'fundamental disagreement' with Sheeran. He criticized the English singer for not taking a public stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict, arguing that there is 'no neutral position between the oppressor and the oppressed.' He also defended his advocacy, stating that his comments were not antisemitic and that 'criticizing Israel... protects Israel from accountability.'
The tour promoter, Messina Touring Group, confirmed that venues had refused to host Macklemore's shows, which would have led to the cancellation of the tour. The group stated that after discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore would not be performing on the remaining dates. Ed Sheeran has not commented on the situation, and no official replacement for Macklemore has been announced.
The controversy also drew in singer Pink, who is Jewish, after she reposted a message criticizing Macklemore's performance. She later clarified that she does not speak for Israel or any government and explained her criticism of Macklemore's actions on stage. The incident highlights the ongoing tensions over free speech, political expression, and the role of artists in public discourse. What remains unknown is whether Sheeran will comment on the matter and who will replace Macklemore for the rest of the tour.
