Muraina, October 07: A census of the endangered aquatic animal Ganga River Dolphin has been started in the district's National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary using modern technology. The census includes a 15-member team from the Wildlife Institute, Dehradun, along with forest staff from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Earlier, trainers from the Deveri Gharial Centre provided training to forest staff of coastal states. During the aquatic animal census in the restricted area of 435 kilometers in February 2026, 155 River Dolphins were recorded. The current census will continue until 15 October, covering the final end of the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary up to Itawa-Pachnada in Uttar Pradesh. This census using modern technology will help reveal the actual number of dolphins and aid in their conservation and preservation. Local forest staff will also be present with the census team, providing them training in the conservation of aquatic animals and census techniques.
