Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis met Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his two-day Delhi visit, discussed Maharashtra's severe drought situation, and sought special assistance from the central government. During the meeting, the CM presented a copy of the state's proposal to the central government, highlighting that around 80% of the districts in the state are affected by drought. A central team will visit various parts of Maharashtra from 8 to 11 October to conduct an on-site inspection of the drought situation, and after receiving their report, the decision on assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund will be taken. The Union Home Minister Shah expressed confidence that the central government will provide maximum assistance to Maharashtra and will stand firmly behind it, the CM stated.
Referring to the discussion with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, they noted that other criteria such as rainfall gaps, groundwater levels, crop damage, and on-site inspections are also considered apart from satellite images. A process to provide assistance based on crop damage is already underway for about 20 talukas that meet the criteria other than satellite images. The central government's assistance may take time, so the state government is prepared to provide immediate assistance to farmers from its available resources, with surveys of crops completed in 23,000 villages, and the remaining work is underway.
During the Delhi visit, the Chief Minister met Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and facilitated the way for the expansion of Nagpur Airport. The Indian Air Force has shown a positive role in transferring 27 acres of land under its control for the new terminal building of the airport. In a meeting attended by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari through a video conferencing, it was decided to grant permission for the movement of heavy machinery required for construction and helicopter parking, and the necessary 'SOP' will be prepared. This has removed the obstacles for the Nagpur Airport project.
Speaking about the MPSC student agitation, the Chief Minister clarified that the government's position is entirely in the interest of the students. The state government has shown a positive attitude towards all five demands made by the student delegation, and the court is preparing for a judicial inquiry regarding the inquiry into the chairman of the Maharashtra Public Service Commission. If any misconduct or misconduct is found during the inquiry, further action will be taken according to Article 317 of the Constitution. A committee under V. Radha has been formed to suggest improvements to increase transparency in the examination, and the process of suggesting improvements is underway. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister expressed dissatisfaction with the political use of students' issues, and reiterated that the police have handled the situation with extreme caution and given the highest priority to the interests of the students.
